Mayor Pro Tem Delivers Meals on Wheels to West U Residents
West U residents that rely on Meals on Wheels for a daily hot meal had a surprise visit from Mayor Pro Tem Susan Sample who made lunch deliveries Wednesday as part of the national March for Meals campaign.
Sample spent about an hour delivering meals to three West U residents. The deliveries were coordinated by West U Senior Services and the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston (ERJCC), the agency that administers the Meals on Wheels program in the West U area.
Mayors in the Houston area were invited by Houston Mayor Annise Parker to join and support Mayors for Wheels, a component of March for Meals. On a designated day each March, mayors across the country deliver meals to seniors in their community. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness about nutritional issues and highlight all local efforts made to meet the needs of seniors, such as Meals on Wheels.
“It was an honor to join other community leaders in serving meals to seniors and spreading the word about Meals on Wheels,” Sample said.
West U Senior Services regularly coordinates with ERJCC to meet the needs of homebound seniors.
Home checks by West U Senior Services and Meals on Wheels from ERJCC are just two examples of services provided by the agencies.
“We have a fantastic collaborative partner in West University Place Senior Services,” said Timothy Stewart, director of community meals at the ERJCC.
