Local Students Presenting $11,546 To Galveston ISD
Administrators and selected students from Lamar High School and its feeder pattern schools -Lanier Middle School, Mark Twain Elementary, Roberts Elementary and River Oaks Elementary- will travel to Galveston on Wednesday, June 3, to present an $11,546.09 check to Galveston ISD officials and students in continuation of the Lamar Feeder Pattern IB Schools Helping Hands Project.
The money was collected from students attending the Lamar feeder pattern to aid students in the Galveston area affected by Hurricane Ike. This will be the third trip to Galveston for the Helping Hands Project team. Galveston ISD is opening a student assistance fund with the money, which principals will be able to draw upon for the needs of individual students.
Last October, Lamar High School and its feeder schools delivered more than 2,000 school supply items such as spiral notebooks, pens, pencils and crayons to Galveston ISD. They had lunch with administrators and student leaders on their campuses to discuss other ways the Lamar schools could lend a hand to help get the district and students back on their feet.
Following Ike, the five International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in the Lamar High School feeder pattern launched a Web site to help devastated campuses on Galveston Island recover from the ravages of the hurricane. The site, at http://ibhelpinghands.org/, is named after the project of the same name which was organized by the five schools. The IB Helping Hands Web site allows participating HISD students to consolidate local relief efforts with those of all 2,100 IB schools throughout the world.
