Lamar Students Take Part In Best Buddies Day At Dionysus Theatre
Best Buddies and Dionysus Theatre will celebrate Best Buddies Day at the June 14 performance of The Pirates of Penzance at 3 p.m. in the Joe Frank Theatre at the Jewish Community Center, 5601 S. Braeswood. The Best Buddies chapters from Bellaire and Lamar High Schools will participate in the event.
Best Buddies is a nonprofit 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships, according to representatives. Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is an international organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,400 college, high school and middle school campuses across the country and internationally. Since 1993, Best Buddies High Schools has paired students with intellectual disabilities in one-to-one friendships with high school students. There are more than 900 high school Best Buddies chapters worldwide.
Best Buddies couples are encouraged to come to the show dressed as pirates for the costume contest. Winners will be announced at the conclusion of the performance and will be awarded trophies.
The Pirates of Penzance will be performed Thursday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 and Sunday afternoons at 3 p.m. throughout June. For tickets, call 713-728-0041.
