Kroger Asks Customers To Enter ‘Design A Reusable Shopping Bag’ Contest

As the 40th anniversary of Earth Day approaches, Kroger customers will have the opportunity to participate in two separate contests promoting green lifestyles in connection with Kroger’s commitment to sustainability efforts.

Kroger is inviting customers to “Design a Reusable Shopping Bagthrough an online contest. Starting April 14 through May 21, customers can visit to submit their original designs for a chance to win a $1,000 Kroger gift card and the opportunity to have their bag design sold in Kroger stores. Four finalists will be awarded a $250 Kroger gift card and five runners-up will receive a $100 Kroger gift card. 

“The ‘Design a Reusable Shopping Bag’ contest is a fun, creative way to get our customers excited about using fewer plastic bags,” says Bill Breetz, president of the Kroger Southwest Division. “Every reusable bag has the potential to save 1,000 plastic bags over its lifetime.”

During the contest, anyone who submits a design and has a valid Kroger Plus card will receive an electronic coupon for a free reusable bag ($0.99 value) that will be loaded directly to their card. Kroger has also partnered with Café Press so that all entrants have a chance to purchase a reusable bag with their submitted artwork printed on it. 

“We’re always looking for ways to reduce waste, conserve energy and better our transportation systems,” says Bill Breetz, president of the Kroger Southwest Division. “By encouraging our customers to use reusable shopping bags and having our associates engage in more efficient bagging techniques, the Kroger Southwest Division diverted millions of plastic bags from local landfills in 2009.”

In partnership with Coca-Cola, Kroger is extending high school juniors and seniors in the Greater Houston area have the opportunity to submit a 1,000-word essay, or less, about the importance of communities uniting to recycle and the positive impact it has on the world.

Through the “Share the Dream Essay Contest,” one student will receive a $5,000 scholarship, another will be the recipient of a $2,500 scholarship, and 20 others will benefit from a $500 scholarship. Students have until April 30 to submit their essays. More information can be found at
