Kelly, Fry, Guffey Running Again – Talianchich Not So Sure
Although no one has officially filed, all eligible West U. councilmen say they will run again – other than Michael Talianchich, who has historically been at odds with other council members over fiscal issues.
Talianchich says he may run again, but hasn’t yet committed.
“(It) depends on if I can get some fiscal conservatives to run with me – it’s too much of a hassle,” said Talianchich, prior to Monday night’s special meeting.
Talianchich consistently fought for a parks bond package at a much lower amount than the $13.8 million proposal that was adopted in November of last year.
The remaining eligible councilmen – Mayor Pro-Tem Bob Fry and Chuck Guffey, say they will file, and Mayor Bob Kelly announced in January he plans to run for mayor again as well. Councilwoman Phyllis Cohen is on her second term, and not eligible to run for a third.
Kelly said in January that his current two-year term as mayor has been a rewarding experience, and he would like to stay at the helm to follow several ongoing projects into completion and within budget.
The General Election will be held on May 9. Voters will vote for mayor and four council members to serve a two-year term of office. Each position is at-large.
The filing deadline is 5 p.m. on March 9. Applications and accompanying documents may be obtained from the city secretary’s office in the Municipal Building, 3800 University Blvd.
April 9 is the last day for submitting voter registration applications in time to vote in this election or for requesting transfer of registration in time to vote in a new precinct.
