IWA Chili Cook-Off Raises $400 For Soup Kitchen

The National Honor Society chapter at Incarnate Word Academy recently sponsored the school’s first annual Chili Cook-Off for Charity, which raised $400 to be donated to the Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen.

NHS sponsor and IWA teacher Lorien Cuneo, thought of the idea for the fundraiser because of the members’ expressed desires to hold a community building charity event.

“In Texas, February kicks off the rodeo season; for Catholics, the month is associated with Lent. I put the two together and came up with the idea for a chili cook-off, the proceeds of which would all go to charity” said Cuneo.

The girls in NHS worked hard to make this idea a reality, organizing, planning, advertizing and executing a community-building event that school representatives say will become a new IWA tradition. Ten teams competed by entering chili in the contest, and around fifty patrons came to the event.
