Is Matthews Market Still On The Horizon?
With no plans filed with the city, it looks like the estimated August opening date for Matthew’s Market is unlikely, if the neighborhood grocery store idea is still on the table.
Jim Reid, developer of the Matthews Market concept, will have to file plans with the city and make a presentation to the Planning and Zoning Commission for approval before the store can open.
Reid, who announced the concept earlier this year, originally said he hoped for an April opening date. The city issued a stop work order in January when signs appeared advertising Matthews Market at the former Matthews Motors property at 6203 Edloe. The plans submitted to the city called for renovations to the former auto repair shop for use as a grocery store, as well as widening the current 3-foot concrete walkway to 8 feet.
Reid, former part-owner of JMH and developer of Matthews Market, says he was disappointed when JMH closed about a year and a half after his partner bought him out. Reid has not returned phone calls concerning current plans for Matthews Market, but said earlier this year that he planned for Matthews Market to become a “neighborhood gathering place.”
