HISD To Hold Career and College Event For Asian-American Students And Parents
Middle and high school students will learn about career opportunities from Asian professionals during the Asian-American College and Career Day, scheduled from 8 a.m.-12:30 p.m. May 2 at Sharpstown High School, 7504 Bissonnet.
Students will receive information about different careers in business, communications, counseling and social work, education, engineering, fine arts, health care, medical information technology and law.
Parents also will have the opportunity to attend an informational workshop that focuses on parent/child communications and relationships. The session will be conducted in Cantonese/ Mandarin, Hindi, Korean, Urdu and Vietnamese.
“There is a wide range of college and career opportunities awaiting our Asian-
American students, though many are unaware of those options,” said HISD Partnership Coordinator for Community Engagement Sabrina Nguyen. “The Asian-American College and Career Day will provide our students a visual display of what their future can hold if they work hard in school and set their sights on success.”
Guest speakers for students will be Asian professionals in their field. The keynote speaker is former Houston Texan Kailee Wong, who graduated with a degree in economics from Stanford University, and completed executive education programs at
Harvard Business School, The Wharton School and the Stanford Graduate School of
Business. Wong has become a successful entrepreneur in Houston.
Guest speakers for parents include Dung Ngo from Baylor College of Medicine, Monit Cheung from University of Houston, Soon Duck Lim from Korean-American Association of Houston and Nimmi Vale from Little Yorkers Montessori School.
Representatives from various colleges and universities will distribute information and answer questions. Interpreters will be available in Cantonese/Mandarin, Hindi/Urdu, Korean and Vietnamese at the exhibition booths.
