Topics will include: Public Education & Legislative Issues, Communicating with the Community, How parents and community members can get involved. There will also be opportunities for questions and answers about current issues and challenges in public education.  Registration and refreshments are scheduled from 5-5:30 p.m. and the lab itself will kick off at 5:30 p.m.

HISD Superintendent Abe Saavedra, Chief of Staff Michele Pola, Assistant Superintendent for Communications and Publications Lee Vela, Early Childhood Manager Mary Jane Gomez and others will be participating in the Learning Lab.

Future labs will be held March 11 from 8– 10 a.m. and May 19 from 5– 7 p.m., also at the Hattie Mae White Educational Support Center.  Topics covered in future Learning Labs will be determined based on community input; tentative topics for the March session include ASPIRE, performance pay and performance management. The March meeting was originally scheduled for March 10 and has been rescheduled to March 11.

“Our first learning lab was very successful and informative,” said Caleen Allen, HISD’s General Manager of Strategic Partnerships. Attendees were provided with an overview of the district, including information about the district’s goals, beliefs, and visions, and an overview of the role of the Board of Education by Board President Harvin Moore.

“Participants had the opportunity to have an educational dialogue on a number of issues,” said Allen.  “We look forward to the January meeting as another opportunity to build on the district’s commitment to engage and discuss the importance of urban public education with parents and community members.”
