Grass will Get Greener
The east end of Colonial Park will remain closed for the next week to 10 days, to allow the new grass to fully recover from an Army Worm infestation.
The city of West University Place, through funding by the Friends of West University Place Parks, recently finished the complete re-turfing of the east end of the park.
But the new turf had an infestation of Army Worms that did not become evident until the worms hatched and began feasting on the green blades of grass. The installer of the new turf immediately applied topical and granular treatments, and the worms have been completely eradicated, according to West U Parks and Recreation Director Tim O’Connor.
While many residents have reported that the new grass appeared to be water-starved, and possibly dying, the lawn is receiving adequate water through the city’s irrigation system and hand application in certain areas. The city has consulted two turf experts, and both agree that the new grass is distressed, but will fully recover.
The city expects “noticeable greening within the next week to 10 days.”
