Free Dance Festival Returns In September

Houston’s free dance festival, A Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance, returns to the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage on Sept. 12 and Sept. 13 at 8 p.m. with a program presenting work by Houston choreographers and dancers. Presented by Dance Source Houston and organized by founder and president Christina Giannelli, the annual program features two premieres, revivals and excerpts of recent works. This sampler showcases a range of choreographic styles set to a variety of music.

Featured on the evening program are: Ad Deum Dance Company, Hope Stone Dance, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company, Revolve Dance Company, Sandra Organ Dance Company, and Suchu Dance. Independent choreographers presenting work include Leslie Skates and Becky Valls.

The curatorial committee for A Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance includes: Dance Source Houston’s president and executive director Christina Giannelli; Christine Lidvall, dance educator and for many years the artistic director of Chrysalis Dance Company; and noted independent choreographer and visual artist Roxanne Claire.

The annual weekend includes a special family matinee, Dance Around the World, featuring Houston Ballet II and J&L New Arts Company 11 a.m. Sept. 13 at Miller Outdoor Theatre.

Admission to A Weekend of Texas Contemporary Dance and Dance Around the World is free. All seating is available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Free tickets for the evening performances will be available at Miller Outdoor Theatre Box Office on the day of the show from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and again at 7 p.m. Listening devices for the hearing impaired are available at the Miller Theatre Box Office one hour prior to curtain.
