Final Round Of National Merit Scholarship Winners Announced, 16 From HISD

This year’s final round of National Merit Scholarship winners was announced today and 16 Houston Independent School District seniors are on the list. Today’s announcement marks the final of four rounds of 2008 announcements. This year, a total of 41 HISD students have been awarded National Merit Scholarships.

Today’s HISD winners include 12 seniors from Bellaire High School, two seniors from the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, one senior from DeBakey High School for Health Professions, and one senior from Carnegie Vanguard High School.

Bellaire senior Daniel L. Coorsh won a scholarship from the University of Southern California and plans to study business and finance. Bellaire senior Laurence D. Nguyen won a scholarship from New York University and will likely study business. Bellaire senior Renuka A. Rege plans a career in law and won a scholarship from Rice University. Bellaire senior Satish Vemuri won a scholarship from the University of Houston and plans a career in public policy and law. Bellaire senior Kyle A. Coughlen will study aerospace engineering with a scholarship from Texas A&M University. Bellaire senior Erin M. Lytle won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in government service. Bellaire senior Harvey D. Powers won a scholarship from the University of Texas-Austin and plans a career in business and investment banking. Bellaire senior Dennis Qian won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in electrical engineering. Bellaire senior Shubha Soman won a scholarship from Rice University and plans to study earth science. Bellaire senior Raymond A. Verm also won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in medicine. Bellaire senior Jonathan T. Wang will likely study business with a scholarship from the University of Texas-Austin. Bellaire senior Andrew B. Wong also plans to study business with a scholarship from the University of Texas-Austin.

HSPVA senior Barbara A. Sicignano won a scholarship from the University of Tulsa and plans a career in veterinary medicine. Fellow HSPVA senior Lindsey E. Smith won a scholarship from the University of Texas-Austin and plans a career in government service and the law.

DeBakey High School senior Shawn P. Reddy won a scholarship from the University of Houston and plans a career in medicine.

Carnegie Vanguard senior Shai Bernstein won a scholarship from Rice University and plans a career in mechanical engineering.

These college-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

This final group of winners brings the number of 2008 National Merit Scholars to
approximately 8,300 nation-wide.
