Estimate For Rec. Center Damage: $335,306
The estimates for repair to two of West U.’s recreation centers following Hurricane Ike damage are in, and have been sent to the insurance company for review. The West U. Rec. Center was not totaled, and the estimate for repairs came in at $335,306. Estimates for repairs to the Colonial Park building came in at $130,767.
The estimates come in just a few weeks before the $13.8 million parks redevelopment bond referendum, which includes rebuilding the Rec. Center and Colonial Park pool, will appear on the Nov. 4 ballot.
“Right now we are going to be in holding mode until after the bond election, then council will make any decision that need’s to be made on how any insurance funds that have been received will be spent,” said West U. City Manager Michael Ross.
If the Rec. Center is renovated rather than rebuilt, Ross says it is not clear yet if the city is then required to bring the building into ADA compliance. The building is not currently ADA compliant, and has asbestos. Neither ADA compliance nor asbestos abatement is included in the repair estimates.
The estimate for the Rec. Center includes $90,450 to repair the gym floor, which warped due to standing water, and $73,241 for total repairs to the basement. Total cost for repair of the first floor is $103,747; cost for repair of the playing fields is $22,005.
The Colonial Park building estimate includes $12,050 for outside repairs to the site – including removing and replacing the wind screens on the tennis court – $14,000 for repairs to the two racquetball courts, and $23,887.93 for roofing repairs.
