Episcopal H.S. Teacher Caught With Child Porn

November 3, 2009

Kent Johnson, the head of the Theater and Dance Department at Episcopal High School, was arrested yesterday and charged with three counts of possession of child pornography.

The charges are third degree felonies that can each bring 2-to-10 years in prison and $10,000 fines. Johnson’s bond has been set at $50,000 for each charge, said Assistant District Attorney Donna Hawkins.

Ned Smith, head of Episcopal High School, said the District Attorney’s office called him before news of Johnson’s arrest got out. The school organized its faculty and counseling staff to help students deal with the news.

“We essentially jumped right into the resources the school could offer the kids, generally offering support,” Smith said. “I think people are … they’re hurt, they’re grieving. The reaction, as you’d imagine, ranges widely.”

Smith said investigators told him they had no evidence that any Episcopal students were involved in any way.

Johnson will go before a magistrate today to receive probable cause and he is due in the Harris County 183rd Criminal Court on Nov. 4.
