Along a stretch of Maple Street in Bellaire, empty lots are spaced between 60-year-old houses like missing teeth in a child’s grin.

Several of the ranch-style homes that remain are up for sale or have been purchased by builders waiting for buyers to come knocking before calling out the bulldozer.
