Council Reviews Tentative Rec Center Opening Schedule
March will be a busy month for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department as staffers focus on the vast number of details remaining in advance of the April opening of the West University Place Recreation Center.
The city council on Monday reviewed a working schedule, which is subject to change, that lays out various deadlines and tentatively schedules a series of ceremonies and open houses in advance of the grand opening on April 12.
Residents will get the chance to purchase memberships to the Recreation Center and the Colonial Park Pool starting on March 1.
By mid March, a flurry of activity will surround the center as the builder turns over the keys and Parks and Recreation staffers begin to move in. Deliveries of furniture, fixtures and exercise equipment are scheduled during the week. Once the machines are in place, staffers will meet with manufacturers to learn about the equipment.
By the end of March, the city will host pre-opening events for VIPs — city council members and members of boards and commissions.
The city will send invitations for an official ribbon cutting, tentatively scheduled for April 9. Council members on Monday briefly discussed opening the ceremony to the public. But the event’s program includes information that may not be interesting to the general public, who are more concerned with simply viewing the facility. Staffers said they wouldn’t turn anyone away.
“We’re certainly not going to be checking invitations at the door,” said Parks and Recreation Director Tim O’Connor.
West U. residents will all be welcome at free open houses on April 10 and 11. Finally, the official grand opening is scheduled for April 12.
