Council Celebrates New Board Members’ First Day
The West U City Council on Monday night unanimously approved the appointment of new and returning members for city boards and commissions.
Volunteers applied in unprecedented numbers this year as a result of aggressive recruitment by the city council.
Newly appointed commission member Sam Parikh said he had a good experience with the Planning and Zoning Commission about five years ago when he built his home in West U. He didn’t have time to volunteer until this year, when his two children entered school.
“I’m starting to think about putting time back in he community,” Parikh said. “So when I looked at the list, the only committee I had ever interacted with was Planning and Zoning.”
Yvonne Jacobs, who is going on her ninth year on the Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Board, said she continues serving because of an ongoing passion for recycling.
“This is just something that we all have to address, the waste issue here,” Jacobs said. “We’re not up to snuff. We recycle only about half of what we should be recycling.”
City Manager Michael Ross said council members tried to reach potential applicants by speaking publicly about applying for board positions at council meetings, advertising in local media outlets, and using an electronic sign outside city hall and newsletter emails.
“The council really reached out and encouraged people to apply,” Ross said. He said he hopes the “new blood” will infuse the city with new ideas to continue tackling.
