Christmas Events Surrounding West U.

Many churches in West University Place and surrounding areas are offering Christmas events and church services. The events are open to the public, and free unless otherwise noted.

Ongoing programs

Christmas Toy Drive (through Dec. 16)
Lakewood Church, 3700 Southwest Freeway, Houston
Donate new unwrapped toys for children of all ages. Drop-off bins located at Lakewood Church North Lobby and Kids Life area. Gifts will be distributed to foster care children through local community outreaches and single parent families.

Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions (through December)
Bellaire Central Baptist Church, 7115 Mapleridge St., Bellaire, TX
The church is accepting monetary donations to support missionary work around the world by Southern Baptists. People can donate at the church office.

Dec. 11

6 p.m., Christmas Family Night
First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Blvd., Houston
Guests can participate in Christmas crafts including ornament and card making, and enjoy treats like dessert, hot cider and cappuccino. Church leaders will read the Advent/Christmas story.

Dec. 12

8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Winter Wonderland Holiday Carnival
Lakewood Church is accepting volunteers to work at this celebration for the foster children of Dephelchin Center. The event will include fabricated snow, ice skating, music and singing by Lakewood Church youth, and a carnival with gifts, games and food. People over 18 can volunteer online.

7 p.m., Performance by Hispanic Baptist Choir of Houston
Bellaire Central Baptist Church, 7115 Mapleridge St., Bellaire, TX
The choir of 45 people will perform a Christmas concert with free refreshments for guests after.

Dec. 13

9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., Missions Mall
ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire, TX
Booths and vendors will set up in the church’s Gathering Space before and after the regular Sunday service. People can purchase gifts of donations to charitable organizations like Living Waters for the World and Heifer International. Hand-made crafts from Haiti and Guatemala will be for sale, and the proceeds help villages get clean water and other basic needs. Also, 10,000 Villages has a booth and proceeds benefit other areas of the world in need.

10:15 a.m., ChristChurch Christmas Cantata
ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire, TX
The church choir will perform the Christmas music of John Rutter.

10:30 a.m., Annual Christmas Party
West University Church of Christ, 3407 Bissonnet St., West University Place
After the church’s regular 10:30 a.m. worship service, church leaders will invite all attendees to join them for the annual Christmas Party, which includes lunch and socializing.

10:55 a.m., Performance of Bach’s Magnificat
Bellaire United Methodist Church, 4417 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
The church choir will perform Magnificat by Johann Sebastian Bach. The Latin-language Christmas music is based on scripture from the Gospel of Luke, in which Mary sings a canticle while she visits her cousin Elizabeth, who is pregnant with John the Baptist.

11 a.m., Lessons and Carols Worship Service
Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
“Lessons and Carols” is a longstanding tradition at Faith Lutheran Church.  All of the Faith choirs, including Faith Youth Choir, Faith Street Theatre, Faith Alive!, Faith Choir and the Faith Hand Bell Choir will participate in this special holiday worship service.

6 p.m., Service of Lessons and Carols
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd., Houston
Guests can join with the church in preparing for Christmas with advent carols and passages that foretell the birth of Christ.

6 p.m., Charlie Brown Christmas
Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
For the ninth year, the Faith Youth Choir will offer “A Charlie Brown Christmas”, a thirty-minute play based on the Emmy and Peabody award-winning Christmas special.

6 p.m., Annual Christmas Concert
West University Baptist Church, 6218 Auden St., West University Place
The church’s Sanctuary Choir, orchestra and special groups like BASIC and SIX10 Singers will perform Christmas classics as well as new arrangements.

6 p.m. and second performance at 7 p.m., Christmas Alive
West University United Methodist Church, 3611 University Blvd., West University Place
Church members will play parts as Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, shepherds and wise men during the church’s live nativity play on the front lawn. The performance even includes real animals like camels and donkeys. Church officials caution guests to arrive early, as the annual event draws large crowds and parking can be difficult.

Dec. 16

11:45 a.m. and second service at 7 p.m., Advent Worship Service
Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
The service allows guests to celebrate and prepare for Christmas. The church will serve refreshments after the service.

Dec. 18

7 to 10 p.m., Single Parent Family Christmas Party
Lakewood Church, 3700 Southwest Freeway, Houston
Single-parent families are invited to celebrate Christmas with food, crafts, caroling and a reading of the Christmas story. Tickets are available for $5 from the Lakewood Church Bookstore.

Dec. 20

9:30 a.m., Christmas Pageant
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd., Houston
Children and youth from the church will enact parts of the story of the birth of Christ.

10:45 a.m., Christmas Musical
Bellaire Central Baptist Church, 7115 Mapleridge St., Bellaire, TX
The church choir will perform traditional Christmas hymns.

10:45 a.m., Messiah Sunday
West University Baptist Church, 6218 Auden St., West University Place
Church leaders will devote a good portion of the service to singing Handel’s Messiah. The church invites members who aren’t normally in the choir, and people from other churches to join the singing. Anyone interested in singing should email Lee Poquette at lpoquette@wubc.org.

6 p.m., Messiah Sing Along
First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Blvd., Houston
Guests can join in the singing and enjoy refreshments after. The church is accepting donations for the Houston Food Bank at the event.

6 p.m., Candlelight Service
West University Baptist Church, 6218 Auden St., West University Place
An evening of music featuring BASIC, scripture, and teaching that focuses on the light of the world. The service ends with the lighting of candles that fade to dark to prepare guests to celebrate Christmas.

Dec. 23

11:45 a.m. and second service at 7 p.m., Advent Worship Service

The service allows guests to celebrate and prepare for Christmas. The church will serve refreshments after the service.

Dec. 24

3 p.m. and 11 p.m., Christmas Eve Service in traditional worship style
Bellaire United Methodist Church, 4417 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
This service in the church’s main sanctuary will feature traditional Christmas music and singing, Communion and a candlelight service

3:45 p.m., Family Service with Holy Communion
St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood, Houston
The church’s Christmas Eve celebrations include music and the story of Jesus’ birth re-enacted through a Nativity Pageant.

4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., English and German-language Christmas Eve Services
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd., Houston
Guests should arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of each service to join in singing holiday carols. The services will include candlelight and communion. The 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. services are in English, while the 4 p.m. service is in German.

4:30 p.m. and second service at 6 p.m., Christmas Eve Service
Crosspoint Church, 4601 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
The church will celebrate Christmas with traditional holiday music and singing and a service about the birth of Jesus.

5 p.m., Family-Friendly Christmas Eve Service
Bellaire United Methodist Church, 4417 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
This service in the church’s Family Life Center is designed to speak to children while keeping their parents engaged and entertained as well. Church members will act out monologues from the Christmas story, and the service features contemporary music.

5 p.m., 7 p.m. and 11 p.m., Three Types of Christmas Eve Services
West University United Methodist Church, 3611 University Blvd., West University Place
Each service includes communion and Christmas music and singing, but the early service is designed for families, the 7 p.m. service features a contemporary style, and the late service is traditional.

5:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m., Christmas Eve Worship Service
Faith Lutheran Church, 4600 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire
Three worship services to celebrate Christmas.

6 p.m., Christmas Eve Candlelight Service
Bellaire Central Baptist Church, 7115 Mapleridge St., Bellaire, TX
The service will include a brief sermon followed by a candlelight service that includes Christmas music and singing.

6 p.m., Christmas Eve Service
ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire, TX
The service will include a reading of the biblical Christmas story, the Lord’s Supper, music from the Chancel Choir and the church’s Handbell Ensemble, ending with a traditional candlelight ceremony.

6:30 p.m., Candlelight Christmas Eve Service
First Christian Church, 1601 Sunset Blvd., Houston
The candlelight service includes communion.

10 p.m., Christmas Eve Festive Choral Eucharist “Midnight Service”
St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood, Houston
A choral prelude introduces the church’s Christmas Eve service, which will end around midnight.

11 p.m., Welcome Christmas Day
ChristChurch Presbyterian, 5001 Bellaire Blvd., Bellaire, TX
The church will hear traditional Christmas music and sing carols to welcome Christmas Day.

Dec. 25

10 a.m., Holy Communion
St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, 4900 Jackwood, Houston
The service provides Holy Communion and will include holiday music performed by the parish choir.

11 a.m., Christmas Day Service
Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2353 Rice Blvd., Houston
Guests can join in carols and communion.
