Challenger Baseball Kicks Off May Events
On May 2 West U Little Leagues held a special celebration honoring the 2009 World Series Champions and the PCA Coaches of the Year prior to the Challenger games.
State Representative Ellen Cohen presented a flag that flew over the Texas State Capitol to Ed James, former WULL president, in honor of this special day in the league’s colorful history. Representing Positive Coaching Alliance, board member Sandy Bryan recognized Manager Trey Cornelius, coaches Will McDaniel and Scotty Zornes, and General Manager Bob McLamb for their efforts in coaching and upholding PCA’s mission.
Cornelius, McDaniel, and Zornes traveled to Stanford University on April 17 for the national Positive Coaching Alliance ceremony where they received their Coaches of the Year award then brought it home to share with their team and hometown.
Every 2009 Senior World Series team and player was escorted to the field by a Challenger player who gave him a World Series ring that was embellished with the WU logo and his name.
These young men, now all playing high school ball, represented West U Little League and the entire community last summer as they won District 16, Section 3, Texas State, and Southwest Region titles before heading to Bangor, Maine where they took the field by storm and brought home the World Series title.
The team included: Davis Atkins, Stewart Cartwright, Luke Cone, Andrew Dunlap, Hugh Echols, Ryan Farney, Evan Fichter, Travis Gauntt, Harrison James, Joshua King, Matt Luna, Cole Lankford, Cameron Neal, Samuel Reid, Michael Resnick, Kevin Roy, and John Williamson.
After the presentations, Pastor DaRhonda Williams of Everlasting Covenant Church gave an invocation then the National Anthem was sung by AOS middle school student Mia Simon (daughter of Judy and Chris Simon) and Mayor Bob Kelly threw the first pitch and the Challenger games began with the World Series players assisting as buddies as well as all the Challenger buddies who come to help each week.
Another event will take place on May 23, following the Challenger games. Randy Bullard and the West U Rotary will prepare a BBQ meal for all Challenger families at the season end celebration. This celebration will be complete with trophies and a DVD presentation about Challenger.
