October 13, 2008

Noted child-rearing experts and authors T. Berry Brazelton and Joshua Sparrow will speak at a free lecture Oct. 14 at Rice University. The talk, “Touchpoints: Stresses and Opportunities for Families with Young Children,” will be from 6:30-8 p.m. in McNair Hall’s Shell Auditorium on the Rice campus, 6100 Main St.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the first 200 attendees will receive a free “Touchpoints” book, compliments of the Center in Houston for Infant Learning and Development.

Brazelton’s presentation will focus on the stresses parents face today and offer solutions for relieving those stresses, based on his pioneering research on infant development and more than 60 years of listening to parents and children. He will discuss what he calls the “Touchpoints Approach.”

Brazelton is a world-renowned authority on pediatrics, child development and parent-child relationships. He established the Brazelton Touchpoints Center, which serves 80 communities across the country, and the Brazelton Institute, an umbrella for 14 international centers and multiple U.S. trainers. He is the author of more than 40 books on pediatrics and child development, including the best-selling “Infants and Mothers” and “Touchpoints: Your Child’s Emotional and Behavioral Development.” His Lifetime Television series ran for 12 years and won two Emmy Awards. Brazelton is professor emeritus of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School.

Sparrow is an assistant professor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, supervisor of inpatient psychiatry at Children’s Hospital, Boston, and associate director of the Brazelton Touchpoints Center. He is co-author with Brazelton of six books and writes a weekly New York Times Syndicate column, “Families Today.”

The event is sponsored by the Center in Houston for Infant Learning and Development, the Center for Early Childhood Education, Rice University and the Rice Children’s Campus.
