West U will join cities across the state and nation to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
NNO is a unique crime prevention annual event that takes place each year on the first Tuesday in October.
Previous National Night Out events have involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, neighborhood organizations, neighborhood crime watch groups, and local officials from all over the city.
The events are designed to:
1. Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
2. Generate support for, and participation in, local anti-crime programs;
3. Strengthen neighborhood spirit; and
4. Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with traditional displays of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, West U residents have celebrated NNO with block parties, cookouts, visits from the police and fire department, flashlight walks, contests, and youth programs.
NNO is an effective, inexpensive and enjoyable program that promotes neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our efforts in maintaining a safe community.
Residents interested in hosting an event can contact Officer Wilson at the West University Place Police Department at 713-668-0330, 713-662-5866 or by e-mail at email@example.com no later than Sept. 27.
