Your City Council Wants You to Serve

West University Place Mayor Bob Fry believes the key to a well-run West U is the quality of the residents on volunteer city boards and commissions. The West U City Council wants resident’s help in making important decisions about the way the city functions and they would like residents to consider committing a few hours a month to municipal service.

The application for board and commission service can be downloaded at www.westutx.gov/boardapplication. The deadline to submit an application is Sept.14.

The city is currently accepting applications for positions on the Zoning and Planning Commission, the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Building and Standards Commission, the Parks Board, and the Recycling and Solid Waste Reduction Board. Additional information about the boards and commissions can be found at www.westutx.gov/boards.

All councilmembers served on a city volunteer board prior to their election.  Councilmember Ed Heathcott served on the Building and Standards Commission. Councilmember Joan Johnson was a long-time member of the Senior Services Board. Mayor-Pro Tem Susan Sample was on the board of The Friends of West University Parks Fund, and Councilmember Dick Yehle served most recently on the Zoning and Planning Commission.

Fry said no special skill set is necessary, only the desire to serve. The professional support for the boards and commissions is provided by the full-time city staff.

“Serving on a board or commission gives you an inside look at issues facing the city and a chance to provide input to solutions,” said Yehle.

“West U is small enough that that any resident has the opportunity to get involved and to shape the city for years to come,” said Sample. “Take a chance and get involved on a city board or a commission – you can make more than friends, you can make a difference.”
