This article has been updated from an earlier version.

A former West U mayor has publicly endorsed three of the four current city council members up for re-election on Saturday.

Former Mayor Bob Kelly sent out an e-mail to residents this afternoon asking them to vote on Saturday and recommended that they vote for Mayor Pro Tem Susan Sample, Councilwoman Joan Johnson, Sonny Brandtner and Councilman Dick Yehle. He did not recommend voting for Councilman Ed Heathcott.

“I am recommending to you the follow for City Council. Susan Sample, Joan Johnson, Sonny Brandtner, Dick Yehle. Mayor Fry is unopposed,” Kelly wrote in his e-mail. “They will make a great Council for us.”

Kelly also asked the recipients of his e-mail to forward it on to their friends in West U.

Heathcott told InstantNewsWestU.com that it will be interesting how the election will turn out.

“It’s going to be interesting how this plays out,” Heathcott said. “I didn’t know Bob Kelly supported dog parks and an independent West University school district.”

Council candidate Sonny Brandtner has supported an independent West U School District throughout his campaign. Brandtner has said that he would like a West U dog park, but at InstantNewsWestU.com’s public candidate forum, he said he would be in favor of a dog park if residents wanted it.

Kelly told the news organization that he took a lot of time and effort in vetting the candidates he recommends for city council. He also said that Mayor Bob Fry told him he could work with the four candidates he recommends.

“I picked the four that I thought would serve the city best right now,” Kelly said. “You can only recommend four.”

Kelly said that he talked to a lot of people about Brandtner and finds him to be energetic and has the time to commit to serving.

“I don’t think it’s any indictment to Ed,” he said. “The four that I picked could do a good job for West U right now.”

Kelly’s e-mail, in its entirety, is as follows:

“Please vote tomorrow (Sat) at City Hall. This is a very important election for City. Also please forward this email to your friends in WU.

I am recommending to you the follow for City Council.

Susan Sample
Joan Johnson
Sonny Brandtner
Dick Yehle

Mayor Fry is unopposed.

They will make a great Council for us.

Bob Kelly
WU Mayor 2007-2011”

To Bob Kelly, Sonny Brandner, and others that may be suffering dementia: the Dog Park issue was settled. West U voted. NO DOG PARK – by majority!

  2. Bob Kelly Says:

Whoever you vote for, just go vote. We need a large turn out. Make you preference known.

  3. It'sTheLaw Says:

WRITE IN HEATHCOTT FOR mayor !

  4. Bob Kelly Says:

I have always supported a joint effort with Bellaire to form an ISD. And like Sonny, I would support a dog park if a majority of WU citizens wanted it.

  5. Bob Kelly Says:

I have aways supported a separate WU ISD. It’s just not had legislative support. As with Sonny, I would support a WU dog park if a majority of WU citizens wanted it.

  6. Sane resident Says:

Sonny Brandtner does NOT support a dog park. None of the candidates supports a dog park. It was a crazy idea that only a handful of people supports.

  7. It'sTheLaw Says:

HEATHCOTT JUST GOT MY VOTE !

  8. Edward Says:

I’ll be sure to vote for Ed Heathcott
