Vision for West U dates to early 1900s

The vision for West University Place was conceptualized in 1910 by Tennessee Gov. Ben Hooper, who had purchased a tract southwest of Houston out of an old Spanish land grant.

The name “West University Place” was inspired by the nearby Rice Institute, now Rice University, which had opened in 1912.

The first lots were sold in the community in 1917.
